Michigan City Man Charged After High-Speed Chase In Porter County

A Michigan City man identified as Travis Isaac Kelly, 43, is charged in Porter County, after police say he fled from officers in a stolen vehicle, drove the wrong way on State Road 49, and was later tracked through fresh snow to the abandoned car.

According to the affidavit, on December 3, 2025, a Flock license plate reader alerted police to a white 2015 Chrysler 200 reported stolen out of Chicago. An officer positioned along I-94 eastbound observed the vehicle in the left lane. When the driver saw the marked patrol unit, the Chrysler conducted an immediate lane change to move further away.

Police attempted to catch up, but the vehicle increased its speed and exited onto southbound State Road 49. When overhead emergency lights were activated, the driver continued fleeing by driving southbound in the northbound lanes. The affidavit states the vehicle then continued eastbound onto Sidewalk Road (CR 1050 N), traveling at speeds in excess of 80 mph in a clearly marked 30 mph speed zone, before a responding unit briefly lost sight of it.

A short time later, the Porter County Sheriff’s Department received information about a Black male entering a vehicle in a driveway in the Windermere Drive area. Deputies found the man inside that vehicle and took him into custody. Officers located fresh, undisturbed footprints in the snow leading northwest from the residence. Following the tracks, they discovered the Chrysler parked in a haphazard way in the driveway of another nearby home.

Police documented that the fleeing vehicle reached over 90 mph in a clearly marked 50 mph zone on State Road 49. The Chrysler was confirmed stolen out of Chicago, and Chicago Police requested a hold on the vehicle.
