Couple Charged After Storage Unit Burglary
A couple is facing felony theft and burglary charges after investigators say they broke into a storage unit at 41 U Lock in St John, swapped out the owner’s lock with their own, stole archery and outdoor equipment, and later pawned the stolen items the same afternoon, according to probable cause affidavits.
According to the filings, a man arrived at his storage unit at 41 U Lock on December 1 and discovered the lock he had placed on the door was missing and had been replaced with a different lock. After gaining entry, he found several items missing, including a Bear bow (valued at $600), an Emarth scope with tripod and case (valued at $200), and a dirt bike helmet (valued at $60). The owner reported the burglary to police and later identified the recovered bow and scope as the items stolen from his unit.
Investigators used police technology and learned that on the same day, December 1 at 2:21 p.m., a woman identified as Codey Jean Creech sold the stolen Emarth scope to Pawn King, located on Broadway in Merrillville. Surveillance video from the pawn shop showed Codey arriving in a maroon 2010 GMC Yukon registered to her and her husband, Brian Anthony Creech, who remained in the vehicle while she pawned the item. She presented her photo ID and left a fingerprint as part of the transaction.
Detectives obtained and executed a search warrant on the couple’s GMC Yukon. Inside the vehicle, police located the stolen Bear bow, along with two pairs of bolt cutters.
During a recorded interview, Brian Anthony Creech waived his Miranda rights and admitted that he and Codey broke into the storage unit and stole the bow and scope.
