Monee Man Charged After 130+ MPH Police Pursuit Across Lake County Leaves Trooper Seriously Injured
Anthony John Coffey, 24, of Monee, Illinois, is facing multiple felony charges after Lake County Sheriff’s officers say he led police on a high-speed pursuit across several Lake County roadways that ended on an interstate ramp in Highland with an Indiana State Trooper suffering serious injuries.
According to the probable cause affidavit, the incident began around 2:30 a.m. on February 9, 2026, when a deputy observed a black Ford Mustang traveling at a high rate of speed on Interstate 80/94 near the Grant Street exit in Gary.
As officers attempted to catch up, the driver allegedly turned off the vehicle’s lights while traveling westbound over Cline Avenue in Highland. Officers activated emergency lights and sirens, but the Mustang accelerated away at speeds reported to exceed 130 miles per hour.
Court documents state the pursuit continued westbound before the vehicle exited at Indianapolis Boulevard in Hammond, made a U-turn, re-entered the interstate, and continued reckless driving at speeds over 120 miles per hour. The pursuit then moved through Highland and Griffith, including Cline Avenue, 45th Avenue, Broad Street, Ridge Road, and back toward Cline Avenue as officers attempted multiple Precision Immobilization Technique (PIT) maneuvers to stop the vehicle.
Indiana State Police eventually executed a PIT maneuver on the Cline Avenue eastbound ramp, disabling the Mustang. Officers found two female passengers and Coffey inside the vehicle.
As officers approached, an Indiana State Trooper was struck during the incident by another police vehicle from the Lake County Sheriff’s Department.
The Trooper was transported to a local hospital and treated for serious injuries. He has since been released and is expected to face a lengthy recovery. Lt. Weems, Commander of the Lowell Post, stated, “We are thankful that Trooper Haddon is expected to make a full recovery.”
Both female passengers also reported head pain and were transported by ambulance for medical treatment.
According to court documents, Coffey later told officers he believed he could outrun the police during the pursuit.
Lodged in the Lake County Jail.
