Two Hammond Men Charged After Daytime Shooting During Marijuana Deal

Jose White, 18, and Jeremiah Moore, 19, both of Hammond, are charged in Lake County, after police say they shot a man during a marijuana deal that turned violent in a Hammond neighborhood on February 23.

According to court documents, officers were dispatched around 1:35 p.m. to the 7000 block of Van Buren Avenue for a report of males shooting at each other. While checking the area, officers were advised a gunshot victim had been located several blocks away in the 6900 block of Monroe Avenue.

Officers located the victim lying on the front steps of a residence suffering apparent gunshot wounds to the face and torso. A black Nissan Altima nearby had visible gunshot damage to the driver’s side door and blood inside the vehicle.

Police made contact at the Van Buren Avenue residence with White, who exited with his hands raised and immediately stated he had been involved in the shooting. Moore was also detained at the residence. Both men were taken into custody.

Investigators determined the victim had driven to the residence for a marijuana transaction with White. Surveillance footage shows White entering the victim’s vehicle moments before multiple gunshots were fired from inside as the car drove away. Moore then fired additional rounds from a rifle toward the moving vehicle from the street.

The victim’s vehicle crashed into a parked SUV before he drove away seeking help and was later found injured several blocks away.

Surveillance footage later captured White and Moore returning inside the residence with firearms and discussing the shooting. Investigators recovered multiple firearms, ammunition, and marijuana from the home.

The victim sustained gunshot wounds to both thighs, chin, and arm, including a broken bone.

White told investigators he believed the victim attempted to rob him at gunpoint during the transaction and that he fired in response. Moore admitted firing the rifle toward the vehicle during the incident.

Both men surrendered to police at the residence shortly after the shooting.
