Hammond Fire Department Responds To Apartment Building Fire

Hammond Fire Department responded to a structure fire around noon Wednesday near the corner of Lyman & Webb. Firefighters encountered heavy smoke on arrival with fire in the basement according to a Hammond Battalion Chief. The structure was reported to be vacant and was struck by lightning last year and still had fire damage to the roof from that incident. Sources told RNS a new owner has recently bought the property and was planning to refurbish it. There were no reported injuries. The fire remains under investigation.
