Accident Leaves Michigan City Woman Dead In Burns Harbor
On April 15, 2020 at approximately 11:19 am, Burns Harbor Police were dispatched to a motor vehicle crash with injuries on US Highway 12 between the Oakhill Rd and Allegius Dr. according to Burns Harbor Police Chief Mike Heckman. Upon arrival, preliminary information indicated a vehicle traveling Eastbound on US Highway 12 went left of center and collided with a semi-truck traveling Westbound on US Highway 12 causing significant damage to both vehicles.
The driver of vehicle Nicholus Wilke of Michigan City was transported to Northlake Methodist Hospital in Gary and later flown to Loyola, Heckman stated. The passenger, 24 year old Courtney Deming from Michigan City, was trapped within the vehicle and was pronounced deceased on location by medical personnel. The Porter County Coroner was dispatched to the scene. An autopsy is scheduled for Friday, April 17, 2020, according to Coroner Cyndi Dykes, toxicology is pending.
The operator of the semi-truck, Edward Tucker Jr with Utley Incorporated, was not injured. The cause of the crash is still under investigation, Heckman said. The roadway was closed for approximately 6.5 hours for members of the Portage Police Department crash reconstruction team to investigate.
