5 Taken To Hospital After Police Pursuit In Gary
On July 20, 2020 approximately 11:00pm Gary Police Officers were in the 3300 Block of Georgia Street having just completed a call for service, according to Lt. Dawn Westerfield of The Gary Police. Officers observed a white vehicle traveling south on Georgia Street at a high rate of speed, Westerfield stated. Gary Officers activated their emergency lights and sirens in an attempt to stop the vehicle. The vehicle continued on for a short time then came to a stop with the driver refusing to roll down the window. While officers continued to make contact with the driver, the vehicle suddenly sped off again and officers pursued it. The fleeing vehicle made several turns still refusing to stop. The fleeing vehicle struck a tan vehicle that was occupied four times causing injury to the occupants, Westerfield said.
The driver of the fleeing vehicle was taken into custody. He is a black male, 46 years old from Indianapolis, but previously form Gary, Police told Region News. Five individuals including the offending driver were transported to the hospital by ambulance for treatment of their injuries. No status update on the injured is available at this time.
The offending driver faces multiple charges including Resisting, weapons offenses and narcotics offenses.
