One Dead After Motorcycle Crash In Griffith Parking Lot

Just before 10:30PM on Saturday August 8th, Griffith police and ambulance personnel responded to the Griffith Park Plaza located in the 400 block of W Ridge Rd for a reported motorcycle accident, according to Commander Keith Martin.  Upon their arrival they observed a man with severe injuries in the parking lot near a motorcycle of which he was reported to have been riding at the time of the crash.

Griffith Officers spoke with relatives and witnesses at the scene and it was learned that the victim was teaching his adult daughter, standing nearby, how to ride the motorcycle, Martin said.  While riding northbound from the south end of the lot, he struck a divider median, throwing him over the median followed by the motorcycle which ended up on top of the rider.  Other people on scene were able to remove the motorcycle from on top of the victim.  The rider, a 60 year old man listed to be from Highland, IN, was unconscious at that time.

Ambulance personnel treated the rider at the scene before transporting him to Northlake Methodist Hospital in Gary with intentions of airlifting him to Chicago.  However, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead prior to the airlift.  The Lake County Coroner has not released the riders name as of 10am Sunday.

Multiple people who witnessed the accident stated that the rider did not appear to be travelling at an unreasonable speed at the time of the crash.  Perimeter lights were on in the lot and the weather was clear and dry.  No other damage or injuries were reported at the time, Police said in a release Sunday.
