State Police Pursuit Ends With Gun Charge & Drug Charges

Monday morning at approximately 2:20 a.m., Indiana State Police Trooper Griffin was patrolling near the intersection of Broadway and 48th St.  A silver Nissan Altima disregarded a stop light and as a result Trooper Griffin initiated a traffic stop.  The vehicle failed to stop and a brief pursuit took place.  The vehicle stopped at 45th and Maryland where both male occupants of the vehicle were taken into custody.  One of the occupants was a juvenile and the driver has been identified as Jelani D. Long, 20, from Gary, IN.  Mr. Long was transported to the Lake County Jail and is being charged with the following: 

  • Resisting Law Enforcement- Level 6 Felony
  • Dealing Marijuana- Level 6 Felony
  • Possession of Handgun No License- Class A Misdemeanor
  • Possession of Marijuana- Class B Misdemeanor
  • Possession of Paraphernalia- Class C Misdemeanor 

The Gary Police Department assisted at the scene.  The vehicle was impounded by AC Towing.

All persons named in this are presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty in court. All charges mentioned are merely accusations, actual charges will be determined by the Lake County Prosecutor’s Office.
