DEALING IN CONTROLLED SUBSTANCE RESULTING IN DEATH IS THE FIRST OF THIS CHARGE IN LAKE COUNTY
The Schererville Police Department began an investigation after a 36 year old Schererville resident died on April 2, 2019, of a heroin overdose, according to Deputy Chief Jeff Cook of the Schererville Police. The investigation led detectives assigned to the departments, Crime Reduction Enforcement Unit, to Kariem A. Rainey. Rainey was identified as the individual who sold the heroin to the deceased 36 year old man.
Rainey has been linked to a number of overdoses that resulted in four fatalities and eight non-fatal overdoses, according to court affidavits. The cases that Rainey has been alleged to be involved in stem from October, 2018 to May, 2019, according to the documents.
Rainey is the first person in Lake County to be charged with Dealing in a Controlled Substance Resulting in Death, a Level 1 Felony.
Schererville Deputy Police Chief Jeff Cook said, “The Detectives did a great job and kept on it.” Cook credited Lead Detective Anthony Buonadonna for not giving up. Detectives Ian Segovia and Matt Djukic were also credited to the investigation and arrest of Rainey.
