St. John Shooter Identified & Charged After Thrown Gun Recovered

The St. John Police have identified the shooting suspect taken into custody Saturday night as 19-year-old, Railaun Cosey of St. John. Cosey is accused of shooting a 16 year old females car Friday night near Shoe Corner. The bullets broke the driver window and put 4 holes in the drivers side of the vehicle.

Cosey was taken into custody by St. John Police & Dyer Police at the Speedway Gas Station Saturday night, located at 101st Ave & Sheffield around 9:30PM after suspects images were released to RNS hours prior. At the time of arrest Cosey was in possession of .22 caliber ammunition that identically matched the casings found at the scene Friday night. Also recovered was the bicycle he was riding during the shooting. No weapon was found on Cosey before he was taken to Lake County Jail.

On the morning of November 1st, police conducted a search warrant on the home of Cosey where he lives with family. Additional .22 caliber ammunition was found in the home but no weapon, police said. Later that evening around 5:30pm police conducted an extensive search of the scene of the shooting utilizing a K-9. Police searched the shooting scene again and the path Cosey would have taken on the bicycle to get home.

Around 6:45pm police recovered a .22 caliber High Standard pistol in some tall grass just East of the location where the shooting took place. The magazine which holds 10 rounds was empty. The weapon was recovered and will be tested for ballistics in the near future, police said Monday.

“The hard work and dedication from the officers of The St. John Police Department, the assistance of The Dyer Police Department, and the cooperation and tips from the public, led this to be a very successful investigation. I highly commend and thank all those that were involved,” St. John Police Chief Steven Flores added.
