Sheriff K-9 Shot By Gary Officer Overnight

A Lake County Sheriff’s Department K-9 was wounded while assisting officers with the arrest of an armed carjacking suspect in Gary overnight, according to a late release Monday by The Lake County Sheriff’s Department.

The incident happened sometime around midnight on November 16, 2020.  Lake County Sheriff’s Department officers were assisting Gary police in the search for the suspect in the 3300 block of Broadway.

While officers were attempting to place the suspect in custody, the K-9 lunged at a Gary officer, causing the officer to fall down.  The officer reacted, opening fire.  The K-9 was wounded and was taken to Hobart Animal Clinic, where he’s listed in fair condition.

RNS was also on scene earlier this month when the K-9 bit a St. John Officer after a police pursuit ending in Highland / Hammond after a crash and foot bail. The St. John officer was treated and released the same night. The Sheriff’s Department also just getting over the loss of runaway K9 “Dax” who was returned to the Canadian School after multiple escapes from his handler. This K9 involved in last nights incident also graduated from the same class this year with Dax.

“I have a deep sense of respect and admiration for our K-9s, their handlers and the job they perform during intense and sometimes chaotic situations,” said Sheriff Oscar Martinez Jr. “Our office is currently reviewing this incident.”

The K-9, named Thanos, is a 2-year-old Belgian Malinois.  He has been with the department for approximately 2 months.
