Porter Police Find Stolen Vehicle Disabled In Roadway

On Sunday morning approximately 2:30AM, Porter Police were dispatched to a disabled vehicle on the road near U.S. 12 & Waverly Road, according to a police report.

On arrival police found a 2015 Honda Civic occupied two times in the roadway. The driver now identified as Darries Purnell, of Chicago, told police the vehicle ran out of gas and he was waiting on a family member. The officer went back to run Purnell’s name and noticed extensive damage around the vehicle. The vehicle was inoperable despite the lack of fuel. Porter Police then asked Purnell if the vehicle belonged to him to which he replied, “I just received it today.” He then told police he borrowed it from a friend named John.

Dispatch then advised Porter Police that the vehicle was reported stolen out of Chicago. Purnell was placed under arrest and charged with – Auto Theft – Level 6 Felony and Never Receiving a License Class C Misdemeanor. The passenger was found to have nothing to do with the stolen auto and was released.
