Two Gary Officers Shot & Suspect Killed During Raid Of Possible Homicide Suspect

Two Gary Police Officers were shot shortly after 4pm Monday. Corporal James Nielsen a 17 year veteran was shot once in the chest which was stopped by his protective vest and once in the left arm. Corporal John Artibey a 14 year veteran took shrapnel to the chin and abdomen. Both officers are currently in stable condition. One of the officers that was shot did fire back killing the suspect.

Gary Police were assisting Merrillville Police on a Homicide case around 1:50 pm. The suspect barricaded himself in the Westbrook Apartments till 4:20 when a police SWAT team made entry and shots were exchanged. The suspect who was shot and killed by police is described by Lt. Dawn Westerfield as a black male in his late 20’s.

Sources are leading us to believe this incident may be connected to the Merrillville homicide at the Hampton Inn Hotel Sunday afternoon but police won’t comment on that at this time. We will be going live from the Gary Police Department Press Conference shortly.

  2. This is sad to see! However, what I find sad as well is that my friend Wydallas Tobar was murdered Jan. 6th in Gary, IN, dubbed the 2nd homicide of the year, and I haven’t heard any news media covering his story? His killer? Whether he’s in custody or not? Why?
