Hobart Police Seek Identity Of Car Jacking Suspect
On January 4, 2021 at approximately 5:00 AM, Hobart Police responded to a 9-1-1 call in reference to a victim, who had just been carjacked at gunpoint, according to Captain James Gonzales of The Hobart Police Department.
The victim told police he was at his place of employment, located on the 800 block of West Old Ridge Road parked next to the Amoco Gas Station. He told the Officer he was parked in his car, which he described as silver 2 door Mercedes when a male approached his vehicle.
The victim told the Officer that the suspect tapped on the driver’s side window of the car with the barrel of his gun and then pointed the gun at him and ordered him to get out of the car. He said the suspect told him to give him his wallet and the keys to the car and he complied. The victim said the suspect fled westbound on Old Ridge Road.
Approximately 25 minutes after the victim was carjacked, Hobart Officers responded to the rear of the 200 block of Main Street in reference to a structure fire. As Officers arrived on scene they noticed that there wasn’t a structure fire, but it was a car on fire that matched the description of the Mercedes that had been carjacked, Gonzales said.
“We aren’t certain at this point of the investigation if this carjacking is a isolated incident or someone is actively carjacking people during the early morning hours. So please, be aware of your surrounding when you are in your vehicle and report any suspicious people that may be lurking around,” Gonzales added.
The Hobart Police is asking for assistance from the public to help identify the suspect shown in the surveillance images below. Anyone with any information can contact Detective Michael Gallagher at 219-942-4991or by e-mail at mgallagher@cityofhobart.org
