Train vs Car Collision In Hammond

Around 4:40 PM Thursday a train collided with a vehicle near the intersection of 169th & Alabama (Kennedy) in Hammond, according to a witness. “The train arms didn’t go down and the car just went then the train hit it,” the witness told RNS. A white SUV remained near the intersection with extensive front end damage and airbags deployed. There were no reported injuries, according to Lt. Steve Kellogg of The Hammond Police.

The crossings will be closed from Kennedy – East of the City for an unspecified amount of time, Hammond Police told RNS. Osborne Ave is open to traffic for a detour.

RNS also learned early Thursday morning around midnight the crossing gates were malfunctioning with them remaining down. Norfolk Southern Railroad owns the tracks but were not immediately available for comment. The railroad was notified at that time by Hammond Police. The investigation is still ongoing into what occurred this evening.
