Hammond Police Respond To Carjacking Friday
On January 22nd, at approximately 4:15 p.m., Hammond police responded to the Speedway located at 6845 Calumet Ave. in reference to a car jacking that took place, Lt. Steve Kellogg of The Hammond Police told Region News.
A female victim advised that she was parked at a gas pump when a younger black male wearing a gray hoodie exited a silver Audi vehicle and approached her. The suspect displayed a handgun and demanded the victim’s key to her vehicle. The suspect got into the victim’s vehicle and fled the area, Kellogg said.
A short distance from this location, Hammond police located the stolen vehicle, and the suspect vehicle, and attempted to stop them. The vehicles fled from the officers and one of the vehicles struck a parked car. The vehicles continued through Hammond and into Illinois where police lost sight of them on the Bishop Ford near 115th. The victim’s vehicle was recovered abandoned in Harvey, Illinois, Kellogg said. Recent weeks numerous stolen cars have been dumped in Harvey, according to sources. No one was injured during the incident and no one is in custody at this time.
Chicago and the South Suburbs have seen Carjackings triple in numbers from previous years for the first weeks of January. There have been over 200 carjackings in the Cook County area as of 1/1/2021.
