Chesterton Fire Department Saves Dog From House Fire
Chesterton Fire Department battles an attached garage fire Friday afternoon that quickly spread.
No one was injured this afternoon, Friday, and the life of a family’s dog was saved as well in a residential fire in the 1600 block of South Fifth Street, the Chesterton Fire Department said.
The CFD responded to the scene at 12:48 p.m., with mutual-aid assistance provided by the the Porter, Burns Harbor, Liberty Township, Valparaiso, and Portage Fire Departments.
Preliminary indication at the scene suggests that the fire began in the attached garage igniting two passenger vehicles parked inside it at the time then extended into a second-floor bedroom located above the garage and from there to a void between the ceiling and the roof, Deputy Fire Chief Nate Williams said at the scene.
Joe’s Towing responded to the scene to pull the burning vehicles out of the garage and onto the driveway, while firefighters in the meantime conducted an interior attack. The CFD was still at the scene at 3 p.m.
Williams was unable to calculate immediately how much water was used to extinguish the blaze, although he did say that “It was less than you’d think,” with most of the gallonage flowed onto the vehicles outside the garage to drown a fuel fire which had begun burning.
Some amount of overhaul was necessary, including cutting a hole in the roof of the house near the peak to allow heat and smoke to exit, Williams said. Another hole, lower in the roof, was made by the fire itself burning through.
Investigators have not yet determined the cause of the fire, nor estimated total damage.
