Alcohol & Speed Believed To Be The Cause Of Overnight Crash Injuring 5
Five people were transported to area hospitals after a two-car crash in the Dyer area Saturday night.
At approximately 11:26 PM, on Saturday, October 7th, police officers with the Lake County Sheriff’s Department were dispatched to the 11500 block of Calumet Avenue for a report of a crash with injuries, according to Lake County Sheriff Oscar Martinez Jr.
A preliminary investigation revealed a black 2002 Pontiac was traveling northbound on Calumet Avenue at a high rate of speed when it struck the rear of a 2005 Mercury. The Pontiac then struck a wooden post and a sideswiped two trees. The Mercury came to rest in a ditch.
The driver of the Pontiac is a 29-year-old Dyer man who was treated at an Indiana hospital then flown to Chicago with a severe head wound and internal bleeding. His passenger, a 34-year-old Crown Point woman, was not hurt.
The driver of the Mercury is a 60-year-old man from California who was transported to the hospital complaining of pain. His passengers were a 94-year-old man from Beecher, Illinois and two women; ages 91 (of Beecher) and 62 (of California). The passengers were transported to hospitals with leg injuries.
It’s believed alcohol and speed may have contributed to the crash, Martinez said.
Ambulances from Cedar Lake, Crown Point, Crete, Lake Hills, and St John all responded.
The incident remains under investigation.
