Alleged Drunk Driver Hits Two Troopers Saturday

Saturday morning at approximately 12:52 AM, two Indiana State Troopers from the Lowell Post were struck by another vehicle while conducting a traffic stop on the westbound side of Interstate 80 near the 8.0 mile-marker or Grant St exit, according to Indiana State Police.

Preliminary investigation by Trooper Kevin Council revealed that Trooper Kay Galvan and Trooper Dennis Griffin had stopped a vehicle for a traffic violation. The troopers were inside their vehicle with their emergency lights activated when they were struck by a silver 2013 Subaru Legacy. Both troopers were taken to the hospital for evaluation and released.

The driver of the Subaru was not injured in the crash and refused medical treatment. The driver was identified as Kyle Dickson, 27, of Hobart. Mr. Dickson was transported to the Lake County Jail where he was incarcerated with a preliminary charge of operating a vehicle while intoxicated while endangering a person, a Class A misdemeanor.

The vehicle that had been stopped by Trooper Galvan and Trooper Griffin prior to the crash was not hit and the driver was not injured.

Troopers were assisted on-scene by Gary Fire Department, Gary EMS and Waffco Towing.

All suspects are presumed to be innocent until/unless proven guilty in court.
