Alleged OWI Driver Crashes Into Swamp
At approximately 10:11 PM, Tuesday, October 17, Highland Police were dispatched to the 8300 block of 179th Street for a report of a vehicle that went off the roadway into the swamp area, according to Highland Police.
On arrival, Officers located a 2018 Kia Sportage well off the roadway and stuck in the mud and water area. Officers made contact with the driver (a 58 year old male from Highland, IN). The driver showed signs of extreme intoxication and he could not get himself out of the car as he could not support himself or stand, Highland Police stated.
Highland Fire Department was then requested to assist with the removal of the male from the vehicle. The Fire Department utilized a Stokes Basket to remove the male from the vehicle and swamp area. The driver was then transported to a local hospital via Superior Ambulance service for treatment.
The vehicle was ultimately towed out of the swamp by Bert’s Towing with much assistance from the Highland Fire Department.
As of this time, charges of OWI, OWI endangering and driving Left of Center are pending with the Lake County Prosecutor’s Office. All persons are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
