Armed Robbery Investigation Leads To Finding A Student With A Machine Gun At Calumet High School

On January 7, 2025 around 6:30 PM, Hobart Police were dispatched to a robbery in the parking lot of Strack & Van Til located at 999 W Old Ridge Road, according to court records.

On arrival police with met with a teen and his grandfather who stated while getting into their vehicle another vehicle pulled along side of them. The driver of that vehicle got out and pointed a gold gun at them while saying, “Not gonna lie, give me everything.” The victims handed the suspect a phone, wallet, $60, and some miscellaneous cards.

Police were able to recover the cell phone that the suspects threw out of the car down the road. Police reviewed surveillance cameras from the area to locate the described suspect vehicle.

About a week after the incident the juvenile victim reportedly came clean about the incident, changing his story saying he was going to meet another student from the school to buy a THC vape cartridge. However the suspect that robbed them was not the student.

Teachers at Calumet High School overheard a few students talking about a robbery to the victim and reported that. That investigation into that conversation lead police to a text conversation and name of a suspect. Police went by the believed suspects house and noticed a similar car in the driveway that was described as the robbery vehicle. That license plate check came back to an address in Valparaiso.

On January 29th around 9:35 AM, police went to Calumet High School and called the alleged suspect to the office. The suspect was patted down and was found to have a Glock handgun with an extended magazine and gold tip in his coat pocket. The handgun also had a switch on it, making it fully automatic. Also found in his possession was a THC Vape Pen.

Police then obtained a search warrant for the suspects home and recovered more THC vape cartridges and THC gummies.

The suspect is now identified as 18 year old, Cesar Aguirre, of Calumet Township. Aguirre was charged with Armed Robbery – Level 3 Felony, Possession of a machine gun – Level 5 Felony, and Possession of a firearm on school property – Level 6 Felony. More charges may be pending.
