Arson Suspected In Lansing Walmart Fire

On January 7, 2022 at approximately 6:34 PM, the Lansing Fire Department was dispatched to a reported fire inside the Walmart located at 17625 Torrence Ave, according to Lansing Fire Officials.

Crews arrived on scene within five minutes and found heavy smoke conditions in the building. Due to the conditions upon arrival and the size of the building, Incident Command requested a Full Still and Box Alarm. Interior crews located two fire areas within the building and were able to extinguish them within fifteen minutes. The actions of the store manager and the building’s sprinkler system kept the fires in check until firefighters arrived. There were no reported injuries to the general public or any firefighters on scene.

The store sustained considerable damage and will be closed until further notice.

Lansing Fire Department was assisted by companies from South Holland, Munster, Calumet City, Dolton, Glenwood, Thornton, Lynwood, Burnham, Homewood, East Hazel Crest, Bud’s Ambulance, Tinley Park, MABAS 24 Investigators, Illinois Office of the State Fire Marshall, and MABAS 27’s Mobile Ventilation Unit.

During the course of the investigation it was determined the fires were intentionally set by one or two individuals inside the store. LFD’s Arson Investigator and LPD Detectives are currently reviewing the store’s security footage for further evidence.
