Body Discovered In Garage By Couple Cleaning

On Friday, March 28, 2025 at approximately 1 PM, the Gary Police Department received a call for service in the 2600 block of Jefferson in reference to individuals finding human remains inside the garage of a vacant home, according to Gary Police. Workers hired to clean a vacant residence discovered the badly decomposed remains. At 2:45 PM, the Lake County Coroner and Medicolegal Death Investigation Team from the Lake County Coroner’s Office were notified and dispatched to 2664 Jefferson St. in Gary.

Region News was on scene and spoke to the couple who told us they were clearing out the garage of accumulated trash dumped over years there when they lifted a mattress and discovered the remains. The couple immediately called the police who responded and were on scene till around 4 PM.

It is unknown at this time the sex and race of decedent, according to the Coroner’s Office. Lake County Coroner David J. Pastrick has called in Forensic Anthropologist Dr. Krista Latham to assist with Forensic Autopsy on Monday, March 31, 2025.

The area in question has been searched by numerous independent search groups in hopes of finding two missing women. A lot of the homes on the block are burned and destroyed or abandoned. Only a few homes have residents living in them.

If you have a loved one missing, please make a formal report, make sure to include, a recent photo, height, hair color, weight, identifiers, what clothing they were last seen wearing and size to the Coroner’s Office.
