Body Recovered From Little Calumet River
Indiana Conservation Officers and Gary Police recovered a body that was found floating in the Little Calumet River this morning near Grant Street around 10:30 AM, Saturday.
A waterfowl hunter who discovered the body was going to retrieve a bird when he saw something in the middle of the river. This area of the river is wide and shallow but layered with thick mud. The mud and shallow water hindered recovery efforts which made the process longer than anticipated, Conservation Officers said.
The unknown subject was badly decomposed so no identifying features were immediately available. The Lake County Coroner is in the process of identifying the deceased.
UPDATE – On Saturday, December 09, 2023 at 12:30 PM, the Lake County Coroner David J. Pastrick responded to a scene with a Death Investigation team from the Lake County Coroner’s Office to 3000 Chase Street (Service Road) Little Calumet River, in Gary.
Family of decedent made identification on Monday, December 11, 2023 at 1:00 PM, with staff at the Lake County Coroner’s Office. The Deceased was a Missing Person since 09/12/2023 and identified as Brittni Campbell, 36, of Gary.
