Brief Standoff in New Chicago Leads to Felony Arrest

New Chicago, IN – On Thursday, June 12, 2025, at approximately 3:48 p.m., officers from the New Chicago Police Department, with assistance from the Lake Station Police Department, apprehended a suspect wanted on multiple felony charges stemming from a violent domestic assault.

The suspect, identified as Darrick Eubanks, had been linked to a brutal domestic battery incident that occurred in New Chicago on May 13, 2025.

A New Chicago officer spotted Eubanks near the 7 Elephants convenience store in the 2900 block of Dekalb Street and attempted to make contact. Eubanks fled on foot and barricaded himself inside a nearby building, prompting officers to establish a perimeter and begin negotiations.

After several minutes of failed communication, officers issued a final warning, informing Eubanks that a Lake Station Police K-9 unit would be deployed if he did not surrender. Eubanks then complied and was taken into custody without further incident. He was transported to the Lake County Jail.

Eubanks now faces multiple felony charges related to the May domestic violence case, in which he is accused of confining and violently assaulting his former partner over a 12-hour period. The victim sustained serious injuries as a result.

Charges include:

  • Criminal Confinement – Level 3 Felony
  • Criminal Confinement – Level 4 Felony
  • Domestic Battery Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury – Level 5 Felony
  • Domestic Battery Resulting in Moderate Bodily Injury – Level 6 Felony
  • Criminal Confinement – Level 6 Felony

New Chicago Police Chief Earl Mayo commended the coordinated effort of both departments in safely resolving the situation.

“We will continue to pursue justice for the victims of violent crimes in our community,” Chief Mayo stated. “This arrest underscores our commitment to protecting the citizens of New Chicago and holding offenders accountable. I want to thank the Lake County Prosecutor’s Office and the Lake Station Police Department for their assistance.”

Chief Mayo also issued a stern message to offenders:

“We will investigate you, we will find you, we will charge you, and we will take you to jail.”
