Bronx Man Charged After Big Fentanyl & Heroin Bust
La Porte County — A Bronx, New York man has been charged in La Porte County after deputies say more than a kilogram each of fentanyl and heroin were found in his vehicle following a traffic stop on Interstate 80.
According to court documents, on September 23, 2025, a La Porte County interdiction deputy was monitoring traffic near the 52-mile marker for a grey Kia Telluride linked to Carlos Velez-Angulo. Earlier that same day, officers had stopped the same vehicle and located hypodermic needles, suspected narcotics, and approximately $5,000 in cash bound with rubber bands. Velez-Angulo was briefly arrested in that stop but later released when the suspected drugs tested inconclusive.
Later in the afternoon, license-plate reader alerts showed the Kia traveling westbound and then eastbound across northern Indiana. Deputies say this contradicted Velez-Angulo’s earlier statements about remaining in the area all day, adding to suspicions. Around 5:57 p.m., the deputy initiated another stop after observing traffic violations.
Court filings state Velez-Angulo consented to a search of the vehicle but suddenly fled on foot across both lanes of the interstate. A manhunt was launched, and deputies inventoried the abandoned Kia. Inside, they located a vacuum-sealed package labeled “CUPRA” and another large package of brown powder, both consistent with narcotics packaging. Two cell phones were also seized.
Investigators later determined the seized packages contained approximately 1,135.5 grams of fentanyl and 1,118.5 grams of heroin. Later that night, Indiana State Police found Velez-Angulo walking along the toll road near the 61-mile marker. After a brief pursuit, he was taken into custody and booked into the La Porte County Jail.
