Calumet City Man Charged After 100 MPH Pursuit, Crash, And OWI In Schererville

Jhonatan Ulloa, 22, of Calumet City, Illinois, is facing multiple felony and misdemeanor charges after police say he led officers on a high-speed pursuit that exceeded 100 mph, crashed into a median embankment, and showed signs of intoxication while refusing to comply with officers.

According to a probable cause affidavit, on February 1 at approximately 9:10 p.m., a Schererville police officer observed a dark gray Infiniti G37 traveling eastbound on US 30 near the west Walmart entrance at a high rate of speed. The vehicle was reportedly traveling about 80 mph in a posted 35 mph zone while weaving from side to side.

As the officer attempted to catch up, the vehicle accelerated. Near Robinhood Boulevard, the driver allegedly began aggressively switching lanes and “lane splitting,” nearly striking two vehicles near Anna Street. Emergency lights were activated, but the vehicle refused to stop, prompting a pursuit.

Police reported the vehicle continued passing motorists by driving on the shoulder and lane splitting again near Trenta Court and Hilltop Drive. Near Austin Avenue, the vehicle reportedly accelerated to speeds in excess of 100 mph while weaving and nearly losing control.

Approaching the bike trail overpass, officers observed the vehicle brake, lose control, cross the median into oncoming lanes of traffic, and slide into an embankment. Officers conducted a U-turn at Cline Avenue and approached the crashed vehicle.

Police identified the driver as Ulloa, who was standing outside the driver’s door with his hands up. Officers ordered him to the ground, but he refused to comply. A Taser was drawn as commands were repeated before Ulloa was taken into custody.

Officers reported Ulloa had bloodshot, glossy eyes and a strong odor of alcohol on his breath. He refused standardized field sobriety tests and refused a chemical breath test. During an inventory of the vehicle, officers located open bottles of Hennessy — one empty and one approximately three-quarters empty — along with a green leafy substance that field-tested positive for marijuana on the front passenger seat.

Ulloa was transported to a hospital for medical clearance, where he refused treatment. A warrant was obtained for a blood draw.
