Calumet City Police Make Arrests In Vehicular Hijaking Including Hammond Man
Two suspects are in custody and facing charges after a vehicular hijacking that began Sunday in Dolton, according to Calumet City Police.
Around 2 p.m. Sunday, Dolton Police reported an aggravated vehicular hijacking of a black Infiniti sedan and moments later, Calumet City Police Officers observed a vehicle matching the description driving at a high rate of speed from Interstate 94 to Sibley Boulevard.
Officers observed the vehicle swerve off the roadway and get stuck in a snow drift. As police approached the vehicle, three males were seen fleeing on foot. Police then pursued the suspects on foot.
One male suspect fled through several yards and refused to comply with an officer’s orders, even after he deployed his Taser. The suspect continued to run through neighborhood yards, but was confronted by another officer and taken into custody.
A second male suspect who fled the vehicle was observed with a handgun, but was not apprehended.
A third male suspect who fled from the driver’s seat also eluded police in a foot pursuit, but just minutes later, a man reported he was pumping gas in the 2000 block of Sibley Boulevard when he was knocked to the ground and his Mitsubishi Outlander was stolen by a suspect matching the description of the driver of the Infiniti.
Later Sunday, Dolton Police recovered the stolen Mitsubishi in the 15100 block of Sunset Drive in Dolton and the driver was taken into custody.
Jeremy Jones, 31, of Springfield, was identified as the driver of the stolen vehicle and is charged with possession of a stolen vehicle and resisting arrest. Michael Powell, 27, of Hammond, Ind., was charged with criminal trespassing to a stolen vehicle and resisting arrest.
