CHARGES ACCEPTED Against Suspect In Fifth Third Bank Robbery
On Sunday December 29th, Highland detectives took a 36 year old male from Chicago, Illinois into custody as a suspect in the Fifth Third Bank robbery that had occurred on Friday December 27th at approx. 5:49pm.
On Monday (12-30-19), Highland Detectives met with prosecutors with the Lake County Indiana Prosecutor’s Office in Crown Point, Indiana. Two counts of Robbery (Level 5 Felony) were accepted against Stephen Lynn Smith (36 years old, from Chicago, Illinois). Stephen Lynn Smith is now in custody at the Lake County Indiana Jail, according to Commander John Banasiak of the Highland Police.
It should be noted that at the time of this bank robbery, Stephen Lynn Smith was on parole out of Morris County, New Jersey after having served prison time there for a prior bank robbery, Banasiak stated.
Highland Police would like to recognize Detective Corporal Brian Stanley and Detective Darren Conley for their hard work and thorough investigation in this case. They also would like to thank the public for the many tips that they received that greatly assisted detectives, Banasiak said.
