Chesterton Firefighter Injured Battling Brush Fire

A Chesterton firefighter was injured on Thursday, March 11, while battling a brush fire at the ANR Pipeline construction site, according to Chesterton officials.

Chesterton Fire Department were dispatched at 12:39 p.m. to a construction site located roughly between the Serenity Spa & Salon and the new mall home to Biggby Coffee and Abbiocco to find a work area and silt sock on fire.

Firefighters used approximately 1,500 gallons to extinguish the fire, but were forced to open the silt sock to get at the embers. The firefighter was injured when a burning section of silt sock rolled onto his right leg, causing the pant leg to ignite. The burning pant leg was doused with a hose line and the firefighter transported to the Franciscan Alliance emergency department on Indian Boundary Road.

The firefighter was okay this morning, Friday, March 12, but somewhat “sore,” Interim Fire Chief Eric Camel said.

The cause of the fire is undetermined.
