Chicago Bears Expand Stadium Search to Northwest Indiana
The Chicago Bears are officially expanding their search for a new stadium location beyond Illinois, with Northwest Indiana now being considered as a potential site.
In an open letter released, Bears President and CEO Kevin Warren said the organization is keeping “every credible pathway open” after years of unsuccessful negotiations with Illinois leaders regarding a new stadium at Arlington Park.
Warren reaffirmed that Arlington Heights remains the only viable option in Cook County, but cited a lack of legislative partnership, uncertainty around infrastructure commitments, and no indication the project would be prioritized by state leadership in 2026.
“Consequently, in addition to Arlington Park, we need to expand our search and critically evaluate opportunities throughout the wider Chicagoland region, including Northwest Indiana,” Warren wrote.
The Bears have proposed investing more than $2 billion privately into a new fixed-roof, world-class NFL stadium, requesting public support only for surrounding infrastructure such as roads and utilities. According to Warren, prolonged uncertainty has made it necessary to explore alternatives outside Illinois.
Indiana Governor Mike Braun responded quickly, welcoming the possibility of the Bears relocating to the Hoosier State.
“The Chicago Bears recognize Indiana’s pro-business climate, and I am ready to work with them to build a new stadium in Northwest Indiana,” Braun said in a statement. “This move would deliver a major economic boost, create jobs, and bring another premier NFL franchise to the Hoosier State. Let’s get it done.”
While no specific Northwest Indiana sites were named, the statement marks the first time the Bears have formally acknowledged the Region as a serious contender in their stadium search.
The Bears have played at Soldier Field for decades and remain one of the NFL’s founding franchises. Warren emphasized that the team’s commitment to the City of Chicago remains strong, but stressed that securing a modern stadium is essential for the organization’s future.
Any potential move would have major implications for Northwest Indiana, including job creation, infrastructure development, and increased regional visibility on a national stage.
No timeline has been announced for a decision.
