Chicagoland Expressway Shootings Up 142% From 2019

We promised an update at the end of the 2020 year on the total number of expressway shootings plaguing the Chicago area.

In 2019 The Illinois State Police investigated 52 expressway shootings across the Chicagoland area, according to ISP. That was a slight increase from 2018, which totaled 43 for the year.

As of December 26, 2020 the Illinois State Police have investigated 126 shootings on Chicagoland expressways. That number is up 142% from 2019.

In July ISP were determining ways to combat the violence on the roads in the midst of the lockdown / pandemic when shootings on expressways reached the high number of 62. Road cameras are up across the area but pretty much only good for determining traffic conditions and not so much for investigation purposes, police said. With the decreased amount of traffic on the roadways with the lockdowns it made for easier getaways and less witnesses to these crimes, police said. The Illinois State Police are still currently looking into License Plate Readers to assist in these investigations.
