Child In Critical Condition After Pool Accident In Griffith
First responders were dispatched to the 500 block of Oxford Circle in Griffith in response to an emergency call placed after a two year old child was reported to have been found in the water of a back yard pool, according to Griffith Police Commander Keith Martin. The caller dialed 911 at approximately 3:45 PM on Sunday, August 8th, stating that he was performing CPR on the girl.
Upon the arrival of police, they assisted the child’s grandfather in performing CPR. Ambulance personnel arrived on scene and took over life-saving efforts and transported the child to Munster Community Hospital.
An investigation into the incident revealed that the child had gotten out of the home when an adult guardian of the girl fell asleep, reportedly not feeling well, Martin stated. Home security footage shows the child manipulating the latch of a gate to the fenced in pool. The child appeared to throw a float in the water before jumping in, and was later discovered by another older child who alerted the child’s grandfather. It is believed that the child had been in the water for at least approx 10-15 minutes before being discovered, police said.
The child was reported to be in critical condition at Munster Community Hospital when she was ultimately transported to Comer’s Children’s Hospital in Chicago Sunday evening. The child’s currrent status has not been released as of Monday morning.
