Crime Spree Started With Highland Robbery From Carjacking Suspects

At approximately 5:03 PM on Saturday January 23, 2021, Highland Police were dispatched to the area of Glenwood and Parrish Avenue for a report of a robbery, according to Commander John Banasiak.

On arrival, officers spoke with a 31 year old male victim who advised he was jogging in the area and was on Parrish when he was approached by a white passenger vehicle with Illinois plates that was occupied by three male blacks. The vehicle stopped and two of the occupants exited the vehicle and each pointed handguns at the victim and demanded everything he had, Banasiak said. The victim surrendered his cell phone and watch and the suspects got back into the white vehicle and it fled south on Parrish. The victim was not injured in the robbery, police said. The suspects were wearing dark clothing and were described to be in their teens or twenties.

The vehicle was found shortly after at Nicks Liquors at 169th & Indianapolis in Hammond running. Shortly afterwards, the suspects and suspect vehicle were involved in a carjacking at a Hammond liquor store on Chicago & Columbia. Which then ended with the shooting at Walmart in Lansing rolling the carjacked Audi.

This Highland case appears to be an isolated incident and is still under investigation by our detectives, to include utilizing our License Plate Reader system, Banasiak said.
