Crime Spree Strikes Region Ending In Shootout

On Saturday around 5 PM, Highland Police responded to a robbery of a jogger near Glenwood & Parrish, according to Commander John Banasiak. The victim stated three male blacks pulled up in a White Sentra then two men got out with guns and demanded everything he had. The victim gave his cell phone and watch to the armed offenders. Police utilized the License Plate Reader (LPR) system to track the description of the offenders vehicle as it went through the area. A short time later the white Sentra was located at Nick’s Liquors on 169th & Indianapolis in Hammond still running. The Sentra was reported hijacked Friday out of Chicago near 85th & Burnham. From the location at Nicks Liquors they jumped in a running Volkswagen and stole it. That car has yet to have been recovered.

At 5:30 PM a carjacking occurred at Star Liquors in Hammond at Columbia & Chicago, according to Lt. Steve Kellogg of The Hammond Police. Two black male suspects armed approached the victim and demanded his 2015 Audi. The victim complied and the suspects fled the area, Kellogg said. This crime has yet to be tied into the Highland robbery.

At 5:30 PM a 53 year old male was robbed outside his home on the 700 block of Highland St in Hammond by an armed black male wearing a mask, Kellogg said. The offender pointed a gun at the victim demanding his wallet. The offender then entered a black vehicle from the passenger side and fled the scene. The victim was not injured. A black “trail” vehicle was noticed during the carjacking but unknown if related to this incident at this time. Around 7PM a rollover accident was called in on Torrence Ave in Lansing in front of Walmart. The vehicle rolled over was the 2015 Audi from the carjacking in Hammond. The Audi had numerous bullet holes in the windshield sitting upside down in front of the strip mall located in front of The Walmart. Multiple people were shot at this location including one that entered Walmart. At this time we believe two were transported to Community Hospital in Munster and a third to Hammond Franciscan Hospital.

The Lake County Coroner was seen at Community Hospital in Munster while officers were called in for crowd control for the shooting victims family at the hospital. The Lake County Coroner has identified a 15 year old, male, from Harvey IL who succumbed to his injuries.

Lansing Police say this Audi was used in an attempt to commit another Aggravated Vehicular Hijacking, on a white Chevy Malibu, in the Marathon lot across from Walmart. Gunshots were fired from both vehicles. The offenders got back into the stolen Audi, and fled the scene, where they later crashed on Torrence Ave. causing the vehicle to rollover and come to a rest in the China Chef lot.

The Lansing Police Department worked with the South Suburban Major Crimes Task Force on this investigation. Daquan Mccree, age 25 of Riverdale, who was in the white Malibu was charged with Unlawful Use of a Weapon by Felon. A juvenile was also charged with Unlawful Use of a Weapon. The investigation is still on-going, and we are also waiting on the results of forensic evidence, submitted to the Illinois State Police Crime Lab.
