Crown Point Man Charged After Alleged Public Indecency Incident Inside Family Dollar

Jayden A. McCain, 18, of Crown Point, is facing charges after Schererville Police say he exposed himself to a store employee and implied he had a firearm while being escorted out of a Family Dollar store.

According to the probable cause affidavit, officers investigated an incident that occurred on January 18, 2026, at approximately 2:40 p.m. at the Family Dollar located at 5124 Pine Island Drive in Crown Point.

Court documents state a store manager told police she was stocking shelves in the candle aisle when McCain approached her to ask about product locations. She reported that he stood uncomfortably close and followed her movements within the aisle. When she turned around, she observed McCain in close proximity with his erect penis exposed through the open fly of his sweatpants.

The employee alerted a co-worker and asked him to escort McCain out of the store while she contacted police. The co-worker told police that while he did not directly see McCain’s genitals, McCain appeared to be erect. During the confrontation, McCain placed his hand inside his jacket pocket, creating the impression that he possessed a firearm. He reportedly stated, “You don’t know what people have on them,” before leaving the store.

Police reviewed surveillance footage which showed McCain entering the store at 2:10 p.m. and remaining in the candle aisle for approximately eight minutes before exiting at 2:43 p.m. The footage reportedly showed McCain remaining stationary in the aisle and appearing erect as he walked toward the exit.

Investigators later met again with the store manager, who told police that as she knelt to stock shelves, she felt McCain’s exposed, erect penis strike her shoulder before she screamed and ran to the front of the store. She also described the vehicle McCain left in as a dark red passenger car with damage to the passenger side and a rear driver-side dent.

Police located the suspect vehicle at the Cedar Point Apartments and identified the registered owner as McCain. Both employees later positively identified McCain in a photographic lineup with what court documents describe as “100% certainty.”

When interviewed by police, McCain admitted to being at the store and admitted to using a “mechanism” to make the employee believe he had a weapon so he could leave. He denied intentionally exposing himself or making contact, claiming he was adjusting tight underwear. A search of his vehicle for a firearm came back negative.

McCain was later formally trespassed from all Family Dollar locations.

Charges filed January 27,2026:

  • Public Indecency – Class A Misdemeanor
  • Battery – Class B Misdemeanor
