Crown Point Police Pursue Vehicle Sunday Morning

On Sunday, September 19, 2021, at 3:20 am, A Crown Point Police Officer observed a vehicle traveling southbound on Court St., in the northbound only section, with no headlights at a high rate of speed, according by to Crown Point Police Assistant Chief James Janda. 

The Officer attempted to stop the vehicle as it accelerated at a high rate of speed and was observed swerving from side to side while still not activating the headlights. The vehicle then slowed down to a stop at Main St. and Anderson St. As the officer began to approach the vehicle on foot it then fled from the traffic stop northbound.

Officers pursued the vehicle on Main St, and into Merrillville where the pursuit later ended in the 6300 block of Waite Ct., after the suspect vehicle backed into a Crown Point Squad car, Janda stated.

During the pursuit several items, including a beer bottle, were observed being thrown from the vehicle.

The driver of the vehicle was a male, 33, of Hammond, Indiana. Also in the vehicle were two, 15, year old juvenile males, from Hammond. Both were released to a parent without charges, at this time.

The driver is being charged with the following:

1. Operating while intoxicated – W/Minor in Vehicle

2. Resisting Law Enforcement in a Vehicle

3. Operating While Intoxicated Endangering

4. Resisting Law Enforcement – Fleeing on Foot

5. Failure of Duty- Vehicle Damage

6. Operating While Intoxicated – Refusal

As well as numerous traffic violation citations.
