Crown Point Woman Charged With Neglect After Leaving Kids In Car
A Crown Point woman was charged with neglect after leaving her babies in the car for over 2 hours while she took a drug test, according to court documents.
On March 5, 2025, at approximately 1:05 PM, Crown Point Police Department was dispatched to Franciscan Point on 12800 Mississippi Parkway, regarding a report that 2 babies were located in a car without any adult supervision.
According to court documents, the Officers were able to locate an SUV with two babies inside the vehicle. The vehicle was unlocked and not running. Officers were able to identify the owner of the vehicle. Hospital Security was then able to identify the suspect, Kareema Muhammad, was currently a patient at the facility, had just finished an appointment, and would be walking out shortly. The Officers observed a female, matching the registered owner’s description, walking out of the building. The Officers then approached her, and asked if the children were in her vehicle. Muhammad responded that they were in the vehicle since they had been asleep upon her arrival at the facility. Muhammad advised that she had a drug test appointment and didn’t want to wake up the children. According to court documents, it was also noted that the children were just under 9 months old.
Video surveillance footage of the parking lot was reviewed. According to court documents, the video shows Muhammad’s vehicle arriving at 10:52 AM, and she exits the vehicle at 10:59 AM. The video shows Muhammad entering the building alone. At 1:00 PM, the reporting party is seen on the video footage walking out to his car, at which time he observed the children in the SUV. The reporting party immediately notified hospital security, who then called the police.
Indiana Department of Family Services was also contacted about the situation.
Kareema Muhammad, age 31, was placed under arrest and transported to Lake County Jail.
