Demotte Man Charged In Jasper County After Stealing Liquor From Same Store Two Days In A Row
A Demotte man identified as Cody Michael Lawson, 27, is charged in Jasper County, after police say he stole liquor from the Demotte Liquor Store on two consecutive days and later admitted to taking multiple bottles.
According to the affidavit, the store manager contacted police on December 2, 2025 to report thefts that occurred on December 1 and December 2. Surveillance video showed a white male wearing a red hoodie entering the business on both days. The affidavit states the male was seen putting two (2) bottles of liquor down the front of his pants each time he entered and left the store without paying.
At 12:32 p.m. on December 2, police were notified that the same male had returned, asked for a cigarette, and left northbound on a blue bicycle. Officers located Lawson approximately one minute later near the 6th Avenue and Almond Street area, riding a girls blue bicycle consistent with the one seen in surveillance footage.
During the arrest, police found Lawson in possession of an unopened bottle of Jack Daniels Honey Whiskey, which the manager confirmed was one of the items stolen.
Lawson participated in a recorded interview and admitted to stealing the bottle of Jack Daniels on 12-02-2025. He also admitted to taking multiple bottles on December 1 but “did not know exactly how many because he stated that he was drunk at the time.”
Charging documents further state Lawson has prior unrelated theft convictions in Vigo County (2025) and Sullivan County (2021), elevating the charges to Level 6 felonies.
