Distraction Burglary Reported In Munster
On Thursday, January 21st at approximately 1:30pm in the 8100 block of Van Buren in Munster, two male suspects posing as Munster Public Works employees reportedly gained entry to a home after telling the homeowner, who was a senior citizen, that there was a garage fire down the street and they needed to check the electrical wiring in the house, according to Munster Police release. While the resident was distracted, cash and jewelry were reportedly stolen from the house.
Police are urging residents to continue to warn your relatives, friends, and neighbors about this type of scam, especially if they are senior citizens (who are often the target of these types of scams) and/or they do not have access to social media and these types of alerts. Advise them to NEVER answer the door for people they do not know and to keep their entrance and storm doors locked. They should speak with unknown visitors through doorbell cameras or a window and should be warned that these types of thieves may wear reflective vests, hard hats, or false identification cards. Residents should always call 911 to report suspicious individuals at their door immediately to the police department.
