Dive Team Rescue At Indiana Dunes

Around 11am a 18-year-old male swimming went missing off the shores of Lake Michigan, according to Porter Fire Chief Jay Craig. Indiana Conservation Officer Tyler Brock stated they were dispatched to the west end of the beach area of Indiana Dunes State Park after witnesses said they saw a person being struck by a wave and not resurfacing. A dive team response was called out which included Coast Guard, Lake County Sheriff Helicopter, Chesterton Fire Department, Portage Fire Department, Crown Point Fire Department, Porter Fire Department, State Park Life Guards, Indiana Conservation Police, Michigan City, and Burns Harbor Fire Department.

After an extensive search a rescue was made around 12:30pm. The male was brought on board Portage Marine Unit where life saving measures began, according to Craig. The victim was brought to the Port where he was transported to a nearby hospital. His condition is not known as of 1:45pm.

The 18-year-old male swimmer was later pronounced deceased at the hospital around 2:10pm according to Indiana Conservation Police. His identity is being withheld pending notification of the family.

The water was closed off for swimmers today due to hazardous conditions. No life guards were currently on duty at the time of the incident.
