Domestic Shooting In Portage Leaves Daughter In Serious Condition and Parents Deceased

On Friday November 29th, 2024, at approximately 7:41 PM, Portage Officers responded to the 6300 block of Monument Avenue in reference to a reported domestic disturbance, according to Portage Police. The 911 caller stated that her father was intoxicated and throwing items inside the house. The caller next reported the male was now armed with a firearm. 911 operators could hear the male saying that everyone was going die followed by the sound of gunfire.

Just as officers were arriving on scene and were approaching the residence, they too heard gunfire from inside, police said in a release.

A team of officers from several responding police agencies forced entry to the home, where they discovered Charles Manville, 45 years old, deceased inside the residence with what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. A second victim, Brandy Manville, 46 years old, was found deceased inside the residence with apparent gunshot wound injuries. A third victim, a 21-year-old female, was found alive inside the residence with apparent gunshot wound injuries. Officers rendered medical aid to the surviving victim before she was transported by Portage Fire Department medical personnel to a nearby hospital. This surviving victim was later transported to a trauma center by Lutheran Air medical helicopter.

No other people were located inside the residence and no officers discharged their weapons during this incident. At this time investigators believe this incident was isolated to the three people found on scene and there is no continuing threat to the community. As of this time, the surviving victim has not been able to a provide a statement to investigators and a motive for this shooting remains unknown. The latest update on the daughter is that she remains hospitalized in stable condition but with serious and life-threatening injuries.

Police have learned that Brandy Manville was an administrative assistant and worked in the main office of Portage High School. The Portage Township School’s administration will have counseling services available Monday morning for P.H.S. students and staff. A moment of silence will also be held tonight at the Portage Boys Basketball game.

Police thanked the Portage Fire Department and Lutheran Air for providing continuing medical aid and transport to the surviving victim. Police also sent their thanks to the officers from the Burns Harbor and Ogden Dunes Police Departments and Porter County Sheriff’s Department who were part of the initial response to this incident.
