Downtown Hammond Structure Fire

A structure fire is currently being fought on the 5100 block of Hohman Ave in Hammond near the Sibley intersection. Hohman Ave is currently closed in both directions near The bridge. The fire was called in around 4:11pm Wednesday by a witness who saw smoke and flames. No injuries are being reported as of 6:30pm.

Officials anticipate the closure to Hohman to last a few hours at least as crews continue to fight flames as of 6pm.

The building owned by El Taco Real restaurant owner, Raymundo Garcia, told RNS it was being used for storage for the family businesses and meetings were being held there occasionally as well. The building was vacant at the time of the fire when witnesses called in smoke. Originally the building was owned by Jupiter and Kresge Dime Store.

UPDATE – Crews are still fighting flames and smoke as of 10pm. Hohman remains closed at Sibley over the bridge.
