Dozens Of Cars Broken Into In Kouts Leading To Chase
On December 16, 2020 Kouts Police Department received a complaint of a vehicle broken into on the 400 block of Church St, according to Kouts Police Chief James Smith.
A Kouts Police Officer responded to the area and began a search. He quickly located a person fleeing the area. That subject ran to a waiting car and the vehicle sped off with an officer giving chase, Smith told RNS. The vehicle reached speeds over 100 mph on State Road 49 leaving Kouts. Porter County Sheriff Deputies deployed stop sticks near Division Road successfully rendering the vehicle near the fair grounds.
Three suspects were taken into custody police said. Two 18-year-olds from Michigan and a 17-year-old from Merrillville were taken in without further incident.
A large amount of property was recovered including two handguns, Smith said. During the incident a Kouts citizen reported his vehicle was stolen. That vehicle was later recovered in Niles, Michigan. Its estimated that several dozen cars were rummaged through with numerous items thrown around yards.
Kouts Police are advising citizens if they believe anything was stolen from their vehicles to contact Kouts Police with their name, number, and list of items missing. Police remind citizens to lock their doors and secure their property.
