Driver Killed After Wrong Way Crash Friday Night In Hammond

On Friday, July 8, 2022 at approximately 10:43 PM, Hammond Police & Fire responded to the area of the 1300 block of Indianapolis Blvd. near Lever Brothers, in reference to an accident with one vehicle on its roof, according to Hammond Police. 

Police arrived and found two occupants of one vehicle, were out of their vehicle, but were taken to a Chicago hospital for injuries.

The driver at fault was deceased inside of his vehicle, which had crossed into oncoming traffic, police stated. A witness on scene described the wrong way driver as excessively speeding south out of Chicago. It is believed the wrong way drivers vehicle was a rental out of Michigan. The identity of the deceased was not released as of noon Saturday.

It is unknown if alcohol or other intoxicants were involved as the investigation is still ongoing. Hammond EMA closed northbound Indianapolis for approximately 4 hours for clean up of debris and fuel. Check back for updates on this article for information as it’s released.
