Driver of Car Struck By Train Intoxicated

On December 6, 2020 at 7:36 PM,  Schererville Police and Fire responded to a report of a vehicle that was struck by a CN train under the bridge in the area of 748 US Hwy 41, according to Deputy Chief Jeff Cook of The Schererville Police.

Investigation revealed that a 28 year old male from Oak Lawn, Illinois was driving a 2015 Ford Focus alongside the railroad tracks and at some point his vehicle ended up getting stuck on the tracks.  The driver exited the vehicle and left it on the tracks unoccupied.  A short time later, a westbound train struck the Ford.  Officers located the driver walking away from the crash scene.  The driver told Officers that he was attempting to get back to Illinois by using his GPS, however he ended up getting lost. 

Upon speaking with the driver, officers observed signs of intoxication and the driver was found to be over two times the legal limit of .08.  After investigation, the driver was later transported to Lake County Jail for lodging. 

Several charges on the driver were forwarded to the Schererville Town Court Prosecutor for review.  Charges include: OWI, OWI- Endangering a person, OWI with a BAC over .15, Failure of Duty and Criminal Trespass to Railroad Property.
