Early Morning Pursuit Ends In Merrillville
On Thursday March 25th at approximately 3:51AM Hebron Police attempted to stop a 2020 Mitsubishi SUV for suspicion the driver had outstanding felony warrants as well as traffic infractions, according to a police report.
The driver failed to stop for officers and attempted to evade them through Porter & Lake County. Officers from Hobart, Winfield, Lake County Sheriff’s Department, and Indiana State Police assisted Hebron Officers during the pursuit. While on 30 a witness stated the SUV went airborne after driving over the median nearly wrecking near his hotel while he was outside.
The vehicle ultimately came to a stop in the Old Chicago Restaurant at 740 E. 81st St in Merrillville where the driver and passenger fled on foot. Officers utilizing K-9’s from Schererville & St. John were able to track the driver now identified as Stephen Huemmerich, 54, of Rensselaer. One Indiana State Trooper suffered minor injuries during the search. The passenger was not found and remains at large, according to police.
Huemmerich was lodged at the Porter County Jail and charged with the following as well as outstanding warrants:
Felony Resisting Law Enforcement
Possession of Meth
Possession of Hypodermic Needle
Possession of a Controlled Substance
