Early Morning Water Rescue In Whiting

An early morning water rescue occurred at Whihala Beach in Whiting off the pier shortly before 6am Thursday. Four teens from Hammond were at the pier to watch the sunrise and were doing skateboard tricks on the pier when the board got jammed in the grate sending the boy over the railing into the water, according to Whiting Fire Chief Gus Danielides. The boy, 17, was able to hold on to the piling in the water while the Whiting Fire Department and Police were able to send a Life Ring over the pier. The Fire Department then used a surf board tied to a rope to get the boy and then worked their way to the rocks where he climbed out of the water. The victim appeared to be in good condition as they walked the individual to the ambulance. No transport was needed and the individuals parents came to get him, according to Danielides.
