
East Chicago Man Accused of Throwing Hot Water in Assault
East Chicago- An East Chicago man is facing a felony charge after court documents allege he punched another man during a dispute and then splashed a pot of hot water on his face, leaving him with severe burns.
According to the affidavit, the incident happened on September 12, 2025, around 8:30 p.m. at a residence in the 4400 block of Indianapolis Boulevard in East Chicago. A man reported he overheard his sister arguing with her boyfriend, identified as Keyon K. Underwood. During the argument, Underwood allegedly called her a “bitch.”
The man said he confronted Underwood, telling him not to call his sister out of her name. When Underwood repeated the slur, the man said he told him to leave the house. At that point, Underwood allegedly poked him in the eye and punched him several times in the mouth with a closed fist.
The victim told investigators that after returning to his bedroom and sitting on his bed because he was dizzy, Underwood entered the room carrying a pot of hot water and splashed it in his face before leaving.
Court documents state the man is undergoing treatment for second- and third-degree burns to the left side of his face involving his eyelid.

• Battery Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury – Level 5 Felony
Underwood was lodged in the Lake County Jail on October 1, 2025.
